About Vidas Cambiadas
On September 14, 2014, Hurricane Odile brought destruction and despair to Los Cabos, Mexico. Recovery lasted for more than a year after the devastation, without working lights on the main streets where locals live. On September 1, 2017, Tropical Storm Lydia again damaged the Cabo area. The amount of destruction the flooding left in its path had never been experienced in the history of Cabo. After each storm, many families were left without homes, food, water, shelter, electricity, gas or necessities to live. Many people and animals were lost due to the torrential winds and flooding.
In 2014, WCA launched the Vidas Cambiadas (Changed Lives) program as a solution to the hopelessness felt after the storms. Vidas Cambiadas continues as an ongoing 7-week program where needy families invite their neighbors to experience the joy of giving and receiving. For one special night each week, 25-30 families gather for a gourmet meal, valuable lessons and gifts of groceries, clothing, shoes, blankets, toys and much more. Children participate through serving meals to the adults and gain personal value in sharing that responsibility. As a part of Vidas Cambiadas, families receive “double blessings” to experience the joy of sharing with other needy families. What they learn through this process is that more joy comes from giving than from receiving. Children and Adults cultivate the feeling of generosity to combat an opposite spirit of entitlement. Tourists actively participate in this program for an opportunity to reach out in love to the local community. Through participating in Vidas Cambiadas, everyone’s lives are transformed.
Previous graduates of Vidas Cambiadas have shared that they no longer feel alone when the storms of life come. They know that they are an integral part of a loving community that will reach out to one another. We teach additional lessons on changing and improving our lives individually and together as families and neighbors together in a well-functioning community.
In 2020, the Covid-19 epidemic expanded Vidas Cambiadas further into weekly outbound rescue missions. We deliver food, diapers, baby formula, water, gas, necessities, etc. to a growing number of needy families, police, marines and others wherever they live and serve. Vidas Cambiadas continues to bring peace, love and hope to Cabo, no matter what type of storm may come. We are not to feel alone nor afraid. Together we are transforming Cabo into a hope-filled community that shares our blessings.
