Jerusalem Concert

Picture
It is our third year performing for the Holocaust survivors. With each year passing, we have little time left to show the survivors how much we love and care for them, and most importantly, how important their stories are to us. Many people throughout the world are denying the holocaust ever happened. Schools in America are taking the holocaust out of textbooks, and as another generation passes away, there is less personal testimony to defend the horrific murder of 6 million Jewish people. History is bound to repeat itself if we fail to learn the important lessons from the past. Unfortunately, in Jewish history, the holocaust has repeated itself time and time again with people seeking out to destroy the Jewish people. 70 years after the holocaust these living survivors are seeing and hearing terror attacks once again against their people in the land of Israel. It is our hope to bring them comfort that we have not forgotten them, that we will not keep silent in the face of terror, and we, as the younger generation, will continue to speak on their behalf and work to make a difference in this world. We are now their voices reminding the next generation to not be silent, but to DO something.

We began our concert to the song, "Jerusalem of Gold", a famous song in Israel that is likened to the national anthem. We learned this song as a call-to-action by a beloved holocaust survivor we befriended, named Rosalie Schiff. Upon sharing her story, she told us, "don't cry, but DO SOMETHING!" In response, we learned this song, Rosalie's favorite song, to share her story and love with survivors and Jews around the world.

Our concert was filled with songs the survivors grew up with and recognized well; songs in Yiddish, Hebrew, and even a song in Russian. One of the songs we sang was written by a man for his grandfather who jumped off a train on its way to Auschwitz. The young man wrote the song about deliverance from death. During this song, Michelle reached out and touched the survivors, giving them hugs and making each feel special and loved.

In turn, the survivors held Michelle's hands, gave her hugs and kisses and responded with more love than we could even imagine. After each song they applauded with so much joy and enthusiasm.

Of course we could not leave out Hava Nagila, Oseh Shalom, and Hallelujah La'olam, songs of joy and praise every survivors knows by heart. The survivors clapped, sang along, and danced energetically!

As the survivors taught us, you must always end your concert with "Hatikvah", the national anthem.   One of the survivors presented us with a plaque of Jerusalem. He has come to all our concerts and cheers us on, reminding us that our singing allows them to forget their past and feel love, peace, and joy.
