City of David

City of David

Picture
Today we brought Adriana, our guest from Mexico, on a tour of the City of David. Pictured above, Adriana is looking down at history. In front of her is the Kidron Valley, separating the Mount of Olives from the City of David and the Temple Mount. Below her is an archeological dig where King David's palace was found! The archeology provides evidence to King David and his palace dated back 3,000 years ago.

Captain Charles Warren was sent from England undercover as an Archeologist who came to Israel in 1867 and discovered the City of David while searching along the Kidron Valley. He found the Gihon spring where he climbed up through a shaft leading to Hezekiah's tunnel. The tunnel was built by King Hezekiah stretching 40 meters connecting the Gihon Spring to the Pool of Siloam. As more and more excavations took place, more and more discoveries were able to prove that this place was in fact the City of David. Below where Adriana stands are the ruins of King David's Palace. The City was able to hold off the Assyrian invasion, but when the Babylonians came to conquer Jerusalem, they took over the City of David, destroyed the temple, murdered Jews, and exiled the Jewish people into slavery in Babylon.
The visitor center once housed offices above our guide, Ayala, is standing. Dr. Eilat Mazar one day came in believing that King David's palace was located right below the offices. With permission, she began to dig. Low and behold, amazing evidence to King David's palace was found! Our guide holds a picture of a Phonecian Capital. In the bible in 2 Samuel 5:11, it says that the Phonecians brought ceder logs, stone and masons to build David's palace. The Phonecian design was found in this place. More than that, many seals belonging to kings and prominent people of the bible were found in this place.

Below you see the seal on the top right from Jeremiah who was prophesying the destruction of the temple. To the left are two other seals signed by officals who threw Jeremiah into a pit because they refused to believe their destruction would come and more so, they did not want to change their ways and repent.

Here is an entrance way leading into one of the palace rooms. You can see the pillars lining the doorway and  imagine what the rooms might have looked like.

The images above depict some of the discoveries found such as seals, pottery, and sculptures of gods the people were worshipping.
