Adopt a Family - Featuring Susie & Wally |
Over the past few years, tourists with giving hearts have participated with WayCoolPeople to support individual families in the poorest neighborhood of Cabo San Lucas, who have little means to support themselves. This month, Susie and Wally returned for their 4th visit to Cabo to see two precious families they have adopted and supported the past 4 years. The families live in a neighborhood called Caribe, located on a riverbed that floods during the rainy season. The people in this community live in wooden shacks they have built with whatever materials they can find to provide shelter. Very few are fortunate to have a strong concrete home to survive during large storms or hurricanes that hit Cabo every 3-5 years. Despite the difficult living conditions, these families come to live here from many different parts of Mexico seeking work opportunity in the tourist industry or construction. WayCoolPeople has been working with this local community since 2012. In that year we met a family of 8 with a baby on the way. The husband worked hard to try to support his family and we noticed how with each visit, they worked on improving their home. Over the years we grew a special love for Maria, Eduardo and their children. Now their daughters Miriam and Ana are grown up and have children of their own. The family is growing!
Susie and Wally came to visit us years ago and decided to adopt the family, supporting them with food, clothing, toys, gas for their stove, water, mattresses, and more! The family is extremely appreciative of the help and support from tourists like Susie and Wally and their friends in Washington. Over the years, Susie and Wally have experienced the birth of Maria's 8th child Ruth, Miriam's baby Jesus, and Ana's babies Brian, and Brianna. Susie is holding baby Brianna, born 4 months ago. The baby fell right to sleep in her arms! Susie has the special touch!

Pictured below is the children's bedroom with new mattresses and a dresser for the children's clothing. These items were donated by Susie and Wally after a record tropical storm hit in September and flooded their home.
Susie and Wally also visited Ever, Dario, and their children Max and Mayrali; another family they have adopted and supported the last few years. This family lives adjacent to the community center WayCoolPeople has built to serve the families of Caribe. Susie and Wally were able to come and see the work we have done on their home, providing them with a bathroom and shower, sealing their roof to be rain resistant, painting the exterior of their home white, and connecting their water tank to our land to provide them consistently with water. Susie and Wally came bearing gifts chosen specific for each family member. Max pointing to his favorite super hero! The mother shared with us how to this day, Max has taken special care of the beanie baby he received from Susie and Wally last year. As the kids grow up, Susie and Wally get to be a part of their lives and grow a special relationship with the family.
